Guilty of these networking bad habits?
Networking is an essential part of personal and professional growth, but following James & Kelly’s appearance as guest speakers at the FSB’s networking event, it was clear that not everyone is clear on networking terminology and the value that networking can bring a small business owners. In this episode Kelly & James reflect on what they learned from the resulting conversations about networking good habits - and the bad ones! They discuss the different between referral networking (BNI) and relationship networking (ONLE) and how that irrespective of the networking organisation, you need to contribute something positive if you want to extract something from the network. Plus the bad habit of running from one event to another online and failing to put in the work that will help generate a result. Thanks to members Tim Brock for putting us forward for the national FSB event!
Based on Melanie Johnson’s ONLE Talks about time spent on social media, it was clear from feedback that LinkedIn was far and away the most popular platform. Although, it seems that business owners tend to get the best results on the platforms they enjoy the most, since they are more likely to put in the time necessary to generate success.
ONLE members notes from around the network:
Alan Braithwaite: “If you’re scheduling posts, why not just schedule time to speak to people on social media?”
Lauren McWilliams: “I have an hour a day booked for engaging on socials. I don’t always do it, but when I’m strict and do it, the leads come in.”
Jo Clayton: “I get a lot from LinkedIn, but I put the time in.”
Chris London: “There are more business owners using Facebook than are on Linkedin, there are just in a different frame of mind.”
Michelle Newman: Loves Insta for the aesthetic and the engagement. “You have to go where you find joy”.
Guy Shahar: “You need the passion to get involved with the conversations to succeed on social, so I’ve focused on the two platform that I enjoy.”
Conclusion: You get out what you put in to networking. Contributions to your network don’t always have to monetary, but you must first provide the same support to others which you are wanting to receive in return - be that in the form of social media engagement, referrals or advice. A little effort will go a long way!
