Show notes
Prospecting versus networking:
In this month’s episode we discussed the key differences between prospecting and networking and emphasised how people can mistakenly confuse the two. Although prospecting can occasionally lead to some successful interactions it seems that in the process you may be burning your bridges with other potential clients due to a cold calling approach. This is not the same practise as networking, where building a relationship is the main priority with the view that business will follow. So be mindful when connecting with people, whether that be in person or on various social media platform that networking is not about a sales pitch.

Kelly’s networking gem: Make a good impression at networking
Going the extra mile to make someone feel welcome can make all the difference when networking. Better still, it puts you right at the top of the list for newcomers to contact you after the event. It’s easy for us to settle with the relationships we have, but pushing yourself to make a visitor feel supported will make your more memorable and ensure that you stand out from the crowd. It’s as simple as sending a quick private message or welcoming email, so don’t miss out on making those new connections!

ONLE members notes from around the network:
Jim Culverwell comes to mind on this topic with his view that you are either a hunter or farmer at networking. Are you at networking to hunt for leads? Or are you farming relationships for longevity?

Conclusion: Prospecting versus networking - there is a big difference! Don’t alienate your clients with an abrupt sales pitch on LinkedIn. You may get a certain degree of success but you will have also burnt bridges with many valuable contacts along the way.
